The mission for Shooting for the Stars Tutoring is to enable students to achieve their fullest potential at their individual pace. All students learn in different ways and I individualize and tailor my instruction to fit the style of learning for each child. Students will have their “lightbulb turn on” at different times and my job is to be there to get the electricity flowing and help the lightbulb burn brightly. There is no right or wrong way to learn a concept; only different ways to teach the concept. Shooting for the Stars Tutoring will teach in a way that speaks to your child. Learning is not a sprint or race, but rather a comfortable journey.
Shooting for the Stars Tutoring is a tutoring company created by me, Christina Jones. I attended West Virginia University and graduated with my Master of Arts (MA) Degree in Elementary Education and my Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree in Special Education. While in the Benedum Collaborative 5 year Master's program, I spent over 1,000 hours gaining experience in classroom settings. After graduating from WVU in 2011, I taught in a special education school for students with learning disabilities (grades 3-8). I taught Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Computers, and Read Naturally to all different grades. As a special educator, I have years of experience teaching students with ADD/ADHD, anxiety, auditory processing difficulties, dyslexia, dyscalculia, Autism, other language based disorders, twice exceptional learners, and gifted students. Along with the time spent teaching diverse learners, I also have a “library” of resources, tools, and strategies to help students with learning differences.
I began my own tutoring business and mission, Shooting for the Stars Tutoring, in 2018. I decided to start my own company because I enjoy working with students and parents to help them achieve their individual educational goals. Coming from a special education background, I offer strategies and teaching techniques that appeal to a diverse group of learners. Throughout my experiences, I have seen students benefit from one on one instruction and small group instruction. I enjoy seeing the impact small group and individual instruction has on a child's learning. My tutoring business allows me to be a part of this and experience it on an everyday basis. With my tutoring business, I witness a diverse group of learners and get to adapt my lessons to meet the needs of each individual student. My tutoring business services have increased from a few individual tutoring sessions to tutoring many students weekly, book clubs, small group tutoring sessions, Writing Workshop, and two forms of sessions; virtual through Zoom and in person.
